There are many situations that may make it hard for a person to responsibly make decisions for themselves. In those cases, it’s important that a trusted person is able to have POA. Your doctor will ask the patient in question different things in order to understand if POA is necessary. This could mean asking questions to check their memory, judgment, understanding, and overall ability to make questions. If your loved one is deemed not competent enough to make decisions on their own, POA will be enacted.

If they eventually are able to recover and make their own decisions again, power of attorney can be revoked. This is common with stroke patients. It’s important that POA is not abused and that it’s the right step to take.
